A Miami man who had been caught in a drug-related overdose of Viagra and a pill of the drug were sentenced Thursday by U. S. District Judge Jack Jianalski.
Romey Johnson had pleaded guilty to an charges of first-degree criminal misdemeanor violation of the Food and Drug Administration, and was ordered to pay a $1 million fine.
Assistant U. Attorney Bradley Westmoreland said Johnson, who was on medication for erectile dysfunction and is scheduled to appear in court Thursday, has been charged with one count of second-degree misdemeanor violations of the Food and Drug Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. Attorney Michael Nissen.
“This is an important time for those who are facing these kinds of charges to be able to say goodbye to the suffering and pain of this nation,” Westmoreland said in a statement. “The judgment sends a clear message that these patients deserve help and deserve treatment.”

Johnson, a resident of South Beach, Florida, was arrested on charges of second-degree criminal misdemeanor violations of the Food and Drug Administration.
According to an arrest report, Johnson pleaded guilty in March, in the U. District Court for Miami and Palm Beach County, to two felony violations of the Food and Drug Administration, and was ordered to pay a $1 million fine. He faces up to 10 years in prison and a $25 million fine.
In a plea agreement, prosecutors said the case is similar to those previously charged in an Indivior case.

Erectile dysfunction is a common sexual disorder that affects between 20 and 40 percent of men in the United States. It can cause significant distress and interpersonal difficulty for some people, so the use of drugs like Viagra or Cialis has become increasingly popular over the last decade.
Viagra and Cialis are the drugs that have been in use for more than two decades. They are the first drugs approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
But they have not been proven to help men who have been experiencing sexual dysfunction, which can lead to other health problems, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
